ATM
ATM - Asynchronous Transfer Mode
ATM is an Acronym for "Asynchronous Transfer Mode". ATM transfers data in cells or packets of a fixed size via a network. ATM's use of small, constant cell size allows ATM equipment to transmit video, audio, and computer data over the same network. The benefit of ATM use is that no single type of data uses more bandwidth than another on the network.
ATM technology creates a fixed route between the source and the destination whenever data transfer begins. This differs from TCP/IP, in which messages are divided into packets and each packet can take a different route from source to destination.
